A junior doctor at a local hospital, she is something of a scandal in the conservative and highly patriarchal. Much as I enjoy John Banville’s Quirke series written under the pseudonym of Benjamin Black, Elegy for April is a slow starter, eventually just as riveting as the others but not as immediately engaging. That said, Black delivers his usual complex portrait of s-era Dublin characters, and it is this particular time warp that he captures so beautifully.

No one’s seen April Latimer for 12 days. In the case of her family, that’s hardly surprising, since they’d parted ways long ago. But the friends she’d made as a junior doctor at the Hospital of the Holy Family—a small group that includes actress Isabel Galloway, Nigerian medical student Patrick Ojukwu and Phoebe Griffin—are worried.
